Southampton Running Sisters has been helping beginners to enjoy running for over 20 years. We currently run 2 types of programme:
Our beginner courses are aimed at women who don't run (yet!). If you can already jog or run for about 30 minutes without needing a walking break, you will probably find it better to join in on one of our regular sessions instead. Don't worry - we love running with a diverse mix of speeds and you won't be left behind or hold anyone back!
Many of our beginners are new to exercise and we've had women start to run in their 60s, as well as in their 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s. There's usually a mix of fitness levels too. Sorry but we can't coach young women under 18 at present. Helping other women to enjoy running is one of the best bits of being part of the club - you will certainly feel supported. Many beginners arrange to do their homework runs together - and the Facebook group is great for organising this.
SRS Annual Beginner Course 2013This year, we're offering a 15 week programme, running from Solent University, starting on Wednesday 10th April at 7pm. The cost will be £35 (£30 concessions) which includes full membership of Southampton Running Sisters through to January 2014. In addition to the weekly practical exercises the programme typically includes a welcome pack, guest speakers, social events and a fun run at the end. During the practical part we match you up with other runners of similar capabilities and help you to gradually move from a walk/run to a continuous jog. The emphasis at the beginner course is not on speed but on building your stamina to handle longer running intervals that still feel comfortable. By basing this year's course at one of our regular start points, you'll be able to meet other members and it should be easier to transition to running with us going forwards. The course is very popular, you are advised to sign up at the earliest opportunity - send an email through to us at info@srs.org.uk as soon as possible for more information.
This 10 week programme aims to enable a complete beginner to progress from running for just 1 minute at a time to running for 30 minutes straight without needing a breather. From there, the new runner will be able to join in with any of the SRS regular runs in Eastleigh and Southampton. By "run", by the way, we mean "gently jog at a pace where you can hold a conversation!"
